No holiday is quite as special to a young child as his or her birthday. After all, a birthday is their own special day. Because birthdays are interesting to children, they are a good topic for literacy activities. Many appropriate reading and writing experiences can be offered around the topic. Teachers who want to implement any of these activities will need to consider sensitive issues around family and family history for children who do not have access to their family memories. For example, children should not be asked to bring mementos or pictures from their previous birthdays if they live in a foster home and have no access to this kind of material. The same would be true about asking children to interview family members about their previous birthdays. One of the ways to be sure that we are not asking children to participate in activities that would make them uncomfortable would be to let the children select from a variety of choices or to determine an activity for themselves.
